Dustin Poirier’s Retirement: Matt Brown Reflects on What Made “The Diamond” Shine

Dustin Poirier’s Retirement: Matt Brown Reflects on What Made “The Diamond” Shine

As Dustin Poirier prepares to step into the UFC octagon one final time at UFC 318, fellow veteran Matt Brown has paid tribute to what made The Diamond truly special.

On Saturday night, Poirier will headline the event in what is expected to be his retirement bout, taking on Max Holloway for the BMF title. Win or lose, Poirier will be closing the curtain on a remarkable MMA career that earned him the admiration of fans and fighters alike.

Though Poirier never captured the undisputed UFC title, he built a legacy as one of the most exciting and resilient fighters in the sport. Known for his grit, heart, and thrilling performances, Poirier took on all comers and consistently delivered.

Speaking on his podcast, Matt Brown shared high praise for the Louisiana native and his journey through the sport.

Matt Brown on Poirier’s Legacy

“I think Dustin made the absolute most of everything he was given,” Brown said. “When he entered the UFC, especially after that loss to Conor [McGregor], I don’t think anyone expected him to become what he did. I remember people asking about McGregor and saying, ‘He hasn’t fought anyone yet.’ At that time, no one saw Dustin as the next big thing.”

Brown went on to highlight how Poirier’s success wasn’t built on raw natural gifts but on relentless effort and growth.

“He didn’t come in with freakish talent or standout physical tools, but he worked incredibly hard and earned everything. I really respect that. I hope he finds joy and success in whatever he does next — maybe writing, speaking tours, whatever it is. He deserves every bit of it.”

As Poirier approaches his final fight, the MMA world reflects not just on his win-loss record, but on the heart, determination, and warrior spirit that defined his career — the qualities that made Dustin Poirier one of the sport’s most respected fighters.
